Zakat Distribution
According to the Quran, zakat may be given only to specific categories of people. These categories are mentioned in Surah At-Tawbah (9:60).
Who Can Receive Zakat?
The Quran mentions eight categories of people who can receive zakat:
1. Al-Fuqara (The Poor)
People who do not have enough wealth or income to meet their basic needs.
2. Al-Masakeen (The Needy)
People who may have something, but not enough to live properly or cover their essential needs.
3. Al-‘Amilina ‘Alayha (Zakat Collectors)
Those appointed to collect, manage, record, and distribute zakat.
4. Al-Mu’allafatu Qulubuhum (Those Whose Hearts Are to Be Reconciled)
People whose hearts may be inclined toward Islam, or whose support may help strengthen the Muslim community.
5. Fir-Riqab (For Freeing Slaves)
For freeing people from bondage or captivity.
6. Al-Gharimeen (Those in Debt)
People burdened by genuine debt and unable to repay it.
7. Fi Sabilillah (In the Cause of Allah)
For causes in the path of Allah. Scholars may differ on some details, so complex cases should be checked with a qualified scholar.
8. Ibn As-Sabil (The Stranded Traveler)
A traveler who is away from home and does not have enough resources to continue the journey or return.
